TOKYO Neighbourhood Walk: Kanda — Books, Curry & a Byzantine Church

4 hours and 30 minutes

Easy

The world's largest concentration of second-hand bookshops, the neighbourhood that invented Tokyo-style curry, and a Russian Orthodox cathedral that has no business being this beautiful.

Part of the Tokyo Yamanote Line Walk series — slow walks through the neighbourhoods along Tokyo's famous loop line, one station at a time. Kanda's Jimbocho district has more second-hand bookshops per square metre than anywhere else on earth. They've been here since the 1880s, when the universities moved in and the students needed somewhere to sell their textbooks. Many of the shops specialise — one does only military history, another only art books, another only maps. This four-hour walk covers Jimbocho and its bookshops, the curry restaurants that have made Kanda one of Tokyo's great lunch destinations, and the Holy Resurrection Cathedral — a Byzantine Revival building from 1891, designed by a Russian architect, sitting improbably in the middle of a Tokyo neighbourhood and still holding services every Sunday.
